AT LEAST 292 children and 75 women have died as a result of Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip, according to a paper published in the Lancet, a medical journal, which uses data from Gaza's Ministry of Health. The death toll has risen steeply since Israel began its ground assault on January 4th. Around 40% of the 910 deaths recorded by Monday January 12th were of women and children under 18, and around half of the 4,250 injured. Gaza has one of the youngest populations in the world, which is one factor in the high proportion of children among the dead and injured. Some 13 Israelis, mostly soldiers, have been killed.

Why is China’s trade surplus still growing when its exports have collapsed?

REVISED figures published this week show that in 2007 China overtook Germany to become the world’s third-biggest economy. At the start of last year China also looked set to become the world’s biggest exporter, but for 2008 as a whole its exports remained smaller than Germany’s, because of a slump in the final months of the year. China’s exports tumbled by 13% (in dollar terms), in the fourth quarter, leaving them 3% lower in December than a year earlier. Yet, despite weak exports, China’s trade surplus rose to a record $457 billion at an annual rate in the fourth quarter—50% bigger than in the same period of 2007.

U.S. seeks to ship hundreds of tons of arms to Israel

The United States is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tons of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

UN call fails to halt Israel push in Gaza

In a new report on internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Central and East Africa, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that, as of last month, there were more than nine million IDPs in that region. Nearly three quarters of them were in the greater Horn of Africa, reflecting the combined internal displacement from crises in Sudan and Somalia. The displacements are triggered mainly by intra-state conflicts and natural disasters or, in many cases, both, the report says. Scarcity of resources, limited access to land, and inconclusive peace and reconciliation processes create multiple challenges. Humnitarian response is often hampered by a lack of access, caused by ongoing conflict or high insecurity, including the targeting of humanitarian workers.

Israel faced mounting international condemnation last night over its military operation in Gaza after its tanks shelled three schools run by a United Nations agency, leaving at least 33 Palestinian civilians dead.

After what was widely seen as the worst single incident in the 11-day operation, Barack Obama, incoming US president, broke his silence on the conflict, saying he was “deeply concerned” about civilian casualties in Gaza and Israel. A number of children was reported to have been killed in the attack.

A UN spokesman said three Israeli artillery shells landed just outside a UN-run girls’ school in the Jabalya refugee camp north of Gaza City, killing at least 33 civilians and injuring at least 55, 15 critically. Officials in Gaza put the death toll at more than 40.

Civilian deaths mount in Gaza war

Palestinian civilians are continuing to suffer as the Israeli military pushes deeper into the Gaza Strip.

At least 540 people have been killed in the territory in the last 10 days, with at least 100 deaths reported since the Israeli ground offensive began on Saturday.

Among the dead on Monday was a family of seven from Shati refugee camp, who were killed by Israeli navy shelling.

Three siblings from one family, as well as a girl and her grandfather, also died in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza during artillery shelling.

Civilian death toll rises as plight worsens

The Israeli ground invasion launched on Saturday into the Gaza Strip has claimed the lives of more than two dozen Palestinians and is worsening already dire humanitarian conditions in the impoverished enclave, aid organisations and witnesses said on Sunday.

At least a quarter of those killed since late Saturday were civilians, the aid groups said. The casualties increased the death toll since Israel began its military operation in Gaza eight days ago to as many as 500 people, including dozens of women and children, they added.

China to start construction of 1st aircraft carriers next year

Statement on continued escalation in and around Gaza


I am deeply alarmed by the current escalation of violence in and around Gaza. This is unacceptable.

I have been repeatedly condemning the rocket attacks by Hamas militants against Israel. While recognizing Israel's right to defend itself, I have also condemned the excessive use of force by Israel in Gaza. The suffering caused to civilian populations as a result of the large-scale violence and destruction that have taken place over the past few days has saddened me profoundly.

The frightening nature of what is happening on the ground, in particular its effects on children -- who are more than half of the population -- troubles me greatly. I have continuously stressed the need for strict observance of international humanitarian law.

I am also pained at the death, injury and damage to United Nations personnel and premises as well as to others associated with our programmes.

All this must stop. Both Israel and Hamas must halt their acts of violence and take all necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties. A ceasefire must be declared immediately. They must also curb their inflammatory rhetoric.

Only then can dialogue start.

I think regional and international partners have not done enough. They should do more. They should use all possible means to end the violence and encourage political dialogue, emphasizing peaceful ways of resolving differences.

Arab Foreign Ministers are going to meet soon in emergency session. I urge them to act swiftly and decisively to bring an early end to this impasse. At the same time, other world leaders must also step up efforts to support a longer term resolution of the issue.

During the past few days, I have spoken to the principals of the Quartet, to regional leaders including Prime Minister Olmert, Foreign Minister Livni, President Abbas, President Mubarak, President Assad, Prime Minister Siniora, Prime Minister Erdogan and Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Amre Moussa, and to a number of other leaders, in order to underscore the need to restore calm in full. I shall continue these efforts personally as well as through my envoys in the field.

I reiterate my call that unhindered access should be ensured for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. The United Nations, through the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process [UNSCO], United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East [UNRWA] and other agencies on the ground have been in continuous contact with all relevant authorities and mobilizing themselves to provide much needed assistance and alleviate civilian suffering.

I expect all parties to fully heed my call. In particular, Israel must keep opening all border crossings necessary for the continued provision of humanitarian supplies. Israeli Government leaders have given me a guarantee that such supplies and personnel would be allowed entry into Gaza. This cooperation must continue on a rolling basis in the coming days.

My colleagues, John Holmes, Under-Secretary-General of OCHA [Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs] in New York, and Karen Abu Zayd, Commissioner General of UNRWA and Maxwell Gaylard, Humanitarian Coordinator, UNSCO, through video links, can provide a further update on the humanitarian situation and our work in the area.

As recession fears cause the nation to embrace greater state control of the economy and unimaginable federal deficits, one searches in vain for debate worthy of the moment. Where there should be an historic clash of ideas, there is only blind resignation and an amorphous queasiness that we are simply sweeping the slouching beast under the rug.

With faith in the free markets now taking a back seat to fear and expediency, nearly the entire political spectrum agrees that the federal government must spend whatever amount is necessary to stabilize the housing market, bail out financial firms, liquefy the credit markets, create jobs and make the recession as shallow and brief as possible. The few who maintain free-market views have been largely marginalized.

Taking the theories of economist John Maynard Keynes as gospel, our most highly respected contemporary economists imagine a complex world in which economics at the personal, corporate and municipal levels are governed by laws far different from those in effect at the national level.

Individuals, companies or cities with heavy debt and shrinking revenues instinctively know that they must reduce spending, tighten their belts, pay down debt and live within their means. But it is axiomatic in Keynesianism that national governments can create and sustain economic activity by injecting printed money into the financial system. In their view, absent the stimuli of the New Deal and World War II, the Depression would never have ended.

On a gut level, we have a hard time with this concept. There is a vague sense of smoke and mirrors, of something being magically created out of nothing. But economics, we are told, is complicated.

It would be irresponsible in the extreme for an individual to forestall a personal recession by taking out newer, bigger loans when the old loans can't be repaid. However, this is precisely what we are planning on a national level.

I believe these ideas hold sway largely because they promise happy, pain-free solutions. They are the economic equivalent of miracle weight-loss programs that require no dieting or exercise. The theories permit economists to claim mystic wisdom, governments to pretend that they have the power to dispel hardship with the whir of a printing press, and voters to believe that they can have recovery without sacrifice.

As a follower of the Austrian School of economics I believe that market forces apply equally to people and nations. The problems we face collectively are no different from those we face individually. Belt tightening is required by all, including government.

Governments cannot create but merely redirect. When the government spends, the money has to come from somewhere. If the government doesn't have a surplus, then it must come from taxes. If taxes don't go up, then it must come from increased borrowing. If lenders won't lend, then it must come from the printing press, which is where all these bailouts are headed. But each additional dollar printed diminishes the value those already in circulation. Something cannot be effortlessly created from nothing.

Similarly, any jobs or other economic activity created by public-sector expansion merely comes at the expense of jobs lost in the private sector. And if the government chooses to save inefficient jobs in select private industries, more efficient jobs will be lost in others. As more factors of production come under government control, the more inefficient our entire economy becomes. Inefficiency lowers productivity, stifles competitiveness and lowers living standards.

If we look at government market interventions through this pragmatic lens, what can we expect from the coming avalanche of federal activism?

By borrowing more than it can ever pay back, the government will guarantee higher inflation for years to come, thereby diminishing the value of all that Americans have saved and acquired. For now the inflationary tide is being held back by the countervailing pressures of bursting asset bubbles in real estate and stocks, forced liquidations in commodities, and troubled retailers slashing prices to unload excess inventory. But when the dust settles, trillions of new dollars will remain, chasing a diminished supply of goods. We will be left with 1970s-style stagflation, only with a much sharper contraction and significantly higher inflation.

The good news is that economics is not all that complicated. The bad news is that our economy is broken and there is nothing the government can do to fix it. However, the free market does have a cure: it's called a recession, and it's not fun, easy or quick. But if we put our faith in the power of government to make the pain go away, we will live with the consequences for generations.

In my mind, there is no excuse or reason for this kind of aggression and domination of one over another. We are all humans and we all deserve a chance to live in peace and raise children.
You should understand that when Israel attacks it means the U.S. attacks. These people who are dying, watching their families destroyed, picking up pieces of their children and trying to survive are not able to distinguish between U.S or Israeli aggression... it all comes from the same evil place to them...Domination and Greed...

A Nugget I Just Found

This morning I saw the media scrambling for the story on the Israeli attacks on Gaza. There were some facts that were consistent with all news outlets... At least 200 Gazans killed, and several hundred injured, also, Israel attacked Gaza while Hamas was attempting to renegotiate the truce that was ending. It is amazing to me how different the news sources view this sad event. In the States, Hamas is viewed as a terrorist organization... In the occupied territories, they are the only hope against U.S. backed Israeli aggression and outright genocide. The Palestinian people have been seen by the U.S. government as dispensable and unimportant in the shadow of American oil interests in the region. Israel is nothing without U.S. backing and the U.S. has no foothold in the Middle East oil fields without Israel. Of course now we have Iraq, but it will take decades to get them into any kind of manageable state from where to assert our domination of the region. Below are a few stories I read this morning...

Haaretz states the attacks on Israel occurred after Israel attacked Gaza. This is the usual formula, who did what first... the international community becomes so saturated with conflicting reports that the real story never sees the light of day.

Trillion...It's The New Billion

As I said yesterday...the Chinese are preparing to end the financing of the American shopping spree. For those of you who still believe the CNN or Fox news pundits bullshit story that Chinese citizens love to work for nothing in order to pay for our unbridled greed and wastefulness, think again. They have been saying that the Chinese economy would freeze if America stopped spending... true in one way. The initial shock to the system will cause some minor corrections in their economy. However, once the economists in China get their heads together and decide to go their own way, they will begin the new era of world economics. They will simply stop exporting and begin consuming their own products. They will be able to enjoy the fruits of their own labor.
Now, as this all begins to unfold before our eyes, the "experts" in Washington and in the media are still just as lost and ignorant as they have been all along. But somehow they continue to preach their party line that the economy is recovering and the bottom has been reached. Bull Shit!!!
Just watch it happen... they've been lying and they're still lying and will continue to lie as long as people believe them and continue being slaves to the system that is robbing them of their time, blood, sweat and tears in order to build an Empire, to carry out the policies of the New World Order...this is not a conspiracy theory... facts speak louder than words.

Noam Chomsky?

If you said who's Noam Chomsky then the American propaganda machine is working as intended... marginalization of the population. And don't forget the dumbing-down of citizens with a government run education system that is a joke. And of course, we can't forget the corporate controlled mass media which tells us absolutely nothing of importance... very few know that the opposite of what the media says is news in many cases.
Noam Chomsky is a linguistics professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been for 50 years. He has been recognized as the most cited author alive and number eight on the list of the top ten most cited authors of all time... A list which includes Plato, Freud, and the Bible. He has been active for over a half century in standing up against power and aggression and its affects on the world around us. He is also my hero... and inspiration. How is it that every intellectual or activist I meet has no idea who this man is? If they do it is vaguely... He has been silenced. We are not supposed to!
At this critical time in American history, I am proud of the stand people like Noam Chomsky have made and I am hopeful that soon Americans will wake up from the government induced slumber we've so comfortably enjoyed for years. If you do not see that we are on the brink of disaster along the lines of the fall of the Roman Empire, then you may want to begin to open your eyes and investigate the world around you.

Why Do We Allow It?

On the way to work this morning I was asking my partner, "why in the hell are we still listening to this shit from these people?" As usual we are left wondering who the hell still listens to mainstream news with any level of seriousness at all? For months now we've heard Paulson and Bernanke blowing each other kisses and polishing each others door knobs... They were lying to us the whole time. Fortunately for me I knew what the truth was but as for everyone else I know, it came as a shock when the markets began selling off and the countries news feeds began to actually say something was wrong. Why is it then that we (you who believed we had a sound economy)just accept the fact that they were lying and then trust them to now, in their new reformed and found out state, to tell us the truth. I for one don't buy it! Honestly...no one should. You all need to open your eyes... I tried many times to start blogs and web pages...Digg and all that bullshit but everyone just wants to keep on sleeping. One day, when the bombs and the death are on our own doorsteps, maybe you will awaken!!!

Hunger Strike!

Milk... it does the body (politic) good

I thought of something while doing dishes earlier... a way to begin to chip away at the hunger in the world. My mind begins to wander as I poured a glass of milk down the drain. (Mind you I am very conscious about waste in our home, however, occasionally a glass of milk sits out to long for even me to drink.) Anyway... I thought of how many glasses of milk were being poured down drains in America tonight. Say two or three children in each household leave 3 or 4 ounces of milk in their glass...at somewhere near 130,000,000 homes in America, that's a lot of milk! Say every household only disposes of one ounce of milk every evening,(which is a light estimate)that's about 130,000,000 ounces of milk a day. That would go a long way towards staving off world hunger. Now... here's the argument most will say, " what are we going to do, bag up our left-overs and ship them to Africa?" No asshole, we're going to stop being so damned wasteful! It really does make a difference when you think of it as one hundred million ounces of milk... or whatever edible organic matter it may be.

Fascism

I have been immersed in information all weekend and the result seems to be overwhelmingly the same every time.The U.S. Government and the Elite are running O U R country into the ground and and they are insuring their survival with our earnings and blood.We the people make up near 80% of the United States yet our voice and input is about 10% of what actual policies represent.The main protagonist in this horror story is the Main-Stream Media which is controlled by the top executives in the country which are tied to the CFR and the FED...let me just give you the straight definition of FASCISM...1.a system of government characterized by one-party dictatorship,centralized governmental control of industry and finance,and militant nationalism.2.a political philosophy favoring such a system.
So let me just say I am very disappointed in the leaders and us as citizens for allowing these many wrongs,lies and deaths happen in the name of the United States of America and I hope we can all get back on board and turn this country around before we are in a police state and have no choice!Do not let them tell you you are not a Patriot for standing up for the Constitution of the United States. What I Believe

I heard an interesting quote today from a journalist who was in the Czeck Republic in the time of Stalinist Fascism and I believe he was talking to a soldier who said,"the good thing about fascist media is that you know anything they say is the opposite of what the real news is.".Something in that statement sound eerily familiar?Maybe it is just my informed perspective on what the news media says today that allows me to apply this fascist twist to our own information sources here in the U.S..Time and time again I come up with examples of outright lies,buried stories,manufactured truths,scare tactics...electronic terrorism via media conglomerates and government controlled newspaper tycoons.It is the evil symbiosis of power and propaganda.
I watched President Hugo Chavez today,uninterrupted by corporate sponsored cheerleaders and corporate pimping of unnecessary goods,and was very surprised to hear a story that has not once been told in the mainstream media...in fact the smear campaign against this man is unfair and criminal in my opinion.What he has done in his country is what all parts of the world are beginning to experience,a global awareness of the wrongs committed and the need for action to change the course of human history.Even here in the United States people are coming to understand that they can oppose the war and be patriotic at the same time,in fact not to oppose the war is a kind of crime in itself...a crime of complacency.The feelings of rage inside of me let me know that soon we will be heard and will have to be addressed,there is no way that I am the only one who knows what has been done by the hands of our government and by our unwillingness to act.As citizens of a Democracy,we are guilty by way of our silence and by refusing to speak out against aggression and imperialism.
As I absorb these reports and writings and documentaries about the past 50 or so years I cannot help but think of my children,I have 5,I am reminded of them almost by the minute as I hear stories of families ripped apart,bodies ripped apart,film footage of the bodies of children lying in piles of rubble or by the roadside near some smoking crater.Scenes of women brutalized,kidnapped,raped and killed or left for dead.So many tragedies(and these are very small and few examples)that have ,from what I have gleaned from books,film and reports,have been in one way or another carried out through United States Imperialist policies.Sometimes even just for corporate favors to big players in the NWO camp.
Well,I am just an average citizen/reporter activist "left wing wacko" yet I still believe that to allow dissent is to allow democracy to work the way The Constitution intends.If our voices are not heard soon we may lose them completely.Keep an eye on the wire tapping legislation running around Washington..and I have heard reports that the FBI is involved in training local police forces to deal with large groups of protesters...hmmm,I wonder what's next on the agenda,2nd amendment?(unconfirmed report)

I have learned in my life that the inner voice is almost always right. If yours tells you that something seems wrong with the world and the way things are going, perhaps it is time to listen. Especially with millions of other people around the world hearing the same call. As the Nazi war criminals learned, following the party line does not exempt you from responsibility... morally, ethically and personally.
